Events for the week of September 6 to 12.

TO Events Calendar.

Our TO events roundup for this shortened back to school week. Other than the Toronto International Film Festival and the Vegetarian Food Fair at Harbourfront, this is a light week for events, but here are some great options for you that may be getting lost in all the film hype.

Around the Web.

Here are some links that have caught our attention recently.

The Wilderness Downtown
If you haven’t participated in this wonderful little project yet, we highly encourage following the link for a romp through your own backyard. You’ll need a modern web browser to keep up with the HTML5 magic, but it’s a beautiful thing.

The League of Moveable Type
Open source type, ready for your best print work or @font-face fun.

Why Free Plans Don’t Work
Selling your software as a service app and the trouble with the freemium upsell.

Don’t Be Ugly By Accident!
Data mining is fun. See what happens when a dating site takes user profile photos and compares them by camera, time of day, location and more.

Tumblr community love.

For sure. We’re just getting started! One of the things we highlighted in our Tumblr pros & cons post was how we dig the liking and reblogging philosophy over straight up comments. We’ve been keeping our eye on some design and tech blogs on Tumblr so we can hopefully kick the reblogging into gear. But even if we’re slow with reblogging here, we’ll look to make up for it on our other blogs

travelhighlights:

Guys, c’mon.

I love you, but you’ve spent more time complaining about various CMS features you wish Tumblr had, then actually doing Tumblr stuff like reblogging and contributing the community. Get on that!

"I went to sign up for this but I stopped. They want a username and a password. What’s a username?"
Things to remember when you’re designing: novice users. This quote is from a user with a LinkedIn account, email, and who’s been using Windows for two decades.

SXSW 2011 panel picker voting in full swing.

We in the interactive industry are in the throws of deciding SXSW 2011 panels and presentations with panel picker voting in full swing. I found much to complain about last year after wandering into far too many crap sessions so I’m taking the initiative to help improve the quality by voting heartily, pitching our own presentation (a collaborative effort with Jon Lax that I believe is very important for the creative industry), and I’ve compiled a list of standout sessions for your perusal. Take a look and please take the time to vote for the sessions that interest you.

Dear Tumblr, please bring me these features.

Last week I wrote about the pro’s and con’s of moving to Tumblr. Now that we’re here and all settled in cozily, I’d like to focus on some improvements to the system that we’d love to see.
