DESCRIPTION:It's free! The Toronto Comic Arts Festival exists to promote the breadth and diversity of comics, and what is considered comics, as legitimate medium of literary and artistic worth. We seek to promote the creators of these works in their broad and diverse voices, for the betterment of the medium of comics and to reach as wide an audience as possible for them. The first Toronto Comic Arts Festival (?TCAF?) was held on the weekend of March 29th 2003. It was the natural progression of years of disparate book signings, author appearances and miscellaneous events put together by a group of volunteers interested in promoting the literary and artistic merits of comic books and graphic novels. Approximately 600 members of the public attended the first festival, with 25 staff and approximately 70 creators in attendance.

DESCRIPTION:Programming Java applications is often viewed as less than pleasurable. This perception is exacerbated when enterprise Java frameworks are stacked up next to all the wonderful new web frameworks and methodologies available to developers today. Grails, a Java-based, agile web development MVC framework, may change all that. In this talk, learn from a one-time skeptic how your team can use Grails to speed up project delivery, streamline maintenance and support, increase functionality and performance, allowing you to spend more time focused on business objectives in your next web project.

DESCRIPTION:There's a very real reason why Connect IT is different this year than any before. Why are balancing three different themes in a single conference that seem like that are each deserving of their own. What pushes the conference to dive into themes like business model generation, personal brand/identity, and social business design, is that business is done with the web. That's a fact of how things are done in the present, and it's also a certainty for the foreseeable future. While other conferences choose to focus on more specific and 'current' themes like cloud computing, it's only because technologies rise and fall in popularity. When we talk about the nature of business and the web though, we're talking about fundamental change and evolution. We saw the first phase of the web evolve when big companies were spending tens of millions of dollars on their websites a decade ago and getting online. We then saw another phase with the acceptance of e-commerce and the idea that people would in fact spend money and purchase goods online. Recently, we've started to learn that consumers want to connect with others online and be a part of social experiences with both other consumers, and brands. It's in that nature that we have an interest in these themes. It's based on some assumptions about how business is changing: 'That your actions online will continue to have impact online in both the ecosystem you interact with and for your own future 'That the trend will necessitate businesses to change the way they do business, and they will need to become more efficient in the digital age 'Lastly, it's only through understanding business models, that we'll be able to design innovative business models for tomorrow's enterprises. The themes of Connect IT 2010 are the themes of how business is changing. We hope you'll join us in exploring each of these ideas further at the Connect IT Conference on March 11, 2010.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre on Wednesday February 24, 2010, from 3-7pm, for MEIC6. A forum to further the conversation in mobile innovation, we will be looking towards the future of the mobile experience. Join us for an afternoon of engaging discussion with industry leaders and researchers. Schedule 3pm - Opening Remarks 3:05pm - Keynote with Gerald Karam, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Networking and Services Research, AT&T Labs. iLoveIt: Riding the accelerating adoption of Smartphones Smartphones, like the Apple iPhone, RIM Blackberry Storm, Palm Pre and the Motorola Droid are changing people's very perception of the use of mobile handsets. An confluence of events has led to this sea change of experience and growing adoption: just the right technology showing up (e.g. touch screens), wireless networking capability, regulation (or the lack of), business models, service pricing, and a snowball effect of smartphone purchases with improved application value. The future looks really exciting because the day when the saturated mobile phone market becomes a saturated smartphone market is not so far off. What then? Are we just going to be talking on the phone? Texting? Browsing the web? Playing games? Watching videos? That much computing and communications power in so many hands, screams out for different thinking - different ways we can enhance the human experience and day to day utility of our $70/month habit. Conversely, the resources that came together to make this dream possible have some bounds - no one can afford the system where everyone is watching whatever video they want over their smartphones all the time, wherever they are - if it could be built at all. Will the system just come to some form of screeching halt, or perhaps, a slide into the ordinary. And maybe ordinary is enough. There are more questions than answers. But it's an fascinating game we can all play, because we're all part of the adoption curve. 4:00 pm - Research and Case Studies

DESCRIPTION:We have a special Third Tuesday Toronto on Feb. 23. It's special because we're holding it in conjunction with Personal Brand Camp - a project being undertaken by Michael Cayley for the students studying social media at Humber College. During the afternoon, the Humber students will meet with volunteer mentors to discuss the importance of their online personnas, the issues involved and how they can develop an online brand that will be consistent with the people they are. Then, in the evening, Mitch Joel will be our featured speaker at Third Tuesday. Mitch has built a remarkable personal brand. He is well known and widely respected as a marketing thought leader. This year, he published Six Pixels of Separation, a handbook to digital marketing and social media. He's often referred to as "Canada's Seth Godin." That's no small feat. Mitch will offer us his perspective on the concept of personal brand. Does he build his brand consciously? Are there rules, implicit or explicit, that he applies in doing this? Is personal brand building something that we all should be engaged in? What advice would he offer to anyone concerned about the image they project online and in the real world. Students will be admitted free of charge. If you're a student, please indicate this in the comment when you register and then bring your student ID as proof of status when you register on the night of the event. As always, thanks are due to our Third Tuesday sponsors - CNW Group, Molson Coors Canada, Rogers Communications, Radian6 and Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. Their support make it possible to bring great speakers like Mitch not just to Toronto but also to Third Tuesdays across Canada.

In this talk, Henry will explore the different trajectories of design, design thinking, and the interface between design and other professions. ABOUT THE SPEAKER ***** Henry Hong-Yiu Cheung Currently jamming with like-minded colleagues in his role as Practice Lead for Systems at Scale at IDEO?s Chicago office, Henry is a designer by practice and an adventurer at heart. DESCRIPTION:Part of Social Media Week. To close out Social Media Week Toronto, we are going to be hosting a rocking session of PowerPoint Karaoke. The rules of Powerpoint Karaoke are simple. A set of presenters and local social media luminaries will be asked to play the role of an earnest expert speaker on topics such as 'How to succeed at social media without really trying', or 'What to do when someone on the internet is wrong', or 'My sensational life as a japanese tentacle porn star' etc.* Each presenter will be given exactly 5 minutes to present and a set of slides they have never seen before. Each presentation deck will be stuffed with facinating imagery, emphatic infographics and genuine business-speak bullet points drawn from real powerpoint decks we've found on the internet. Naturaly, in the hands of a less-skilled presenter, some of this totally random content might seem somewhat 'tangential' to the topic at hand. But as you will see, these challenges will be no problem to our powerpoint rockstars. At the end of the evening. The audience or jury will be asked to vote for the winning presentations based on humour, style points, or general awesomeness.

Cover: $10 Music by the People Downtown: http://peopledowntown.com Big Thanks to our event sponsor, The Foundation Room: http://www.foundationroom.ca More about V-Day: V-Day (www.vday.org) is an international movement committed to the eradication of violence against women. Our signature fundraiser, founder Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues, raises money and awareness for shelters for battered women and girls. This year, V-Day took place in 2,200 venues around the world. V-Day's theatrical catalogue now also includes A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, a stunning collection of writings exploring violence against women from several perspectives both male and female. Our beneficiaries this year will be METRAC (www.metrac.org) and the women's shelter program at the YWCA. Our goal is to raise more money to combat abuse against women and girls than ever before. We are also committed to our Global Spotlight - the Women of the Democratic Republic of Congo - what the UN now calls "the rape capital of the world." Last year, the DRC was declared THE most dangerous place on Earth to be born female. Participate in this global movement, celebrate the women and girls in your life and community, and be part of a collective voice that refuses to be ignored, a voice that says NO to violence against women and girls. Come and party with us! Contribute to The VAULT on January 28th!!

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome; admission is free. Limited seating available; guests are advised to arrive early. In anticipation of the launch of OCAD's annual Design Competition, the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) Faculty of Design will host a free public talk by celebrated architect and designer of OCAD's Sharp Centre for Design, Will Alsop, on Wednesday, January 20, at 7 p.m. Alsop's talk Reassembly Required is presented in conjunction with the Toronto International Design Festival. As one of the UK's most prominent architects, Alsop is guided by the principle that architecture is both a vehicle and symbol of social change and renewal. This philosophy extends from the design of individual buildings to embracing broader principles of urbanism and city development. By abandoning the hegemony of an acceptable style, he has rendered the whole process of architecture one of increasing fluidity and transparency; as such he continues to uncover new and refreshing positions for architecture. OCAD's annual Design Competition has been a tradition at OCAD since 1997. It is a 'charette' in which interdisciplinary teams of Faculty of Design students are given a special project and are asked to complete their design proposals within a four day time limit. The challenge is launched with guest speakers to offer insight and inspiration to students, and outcomes are judged by a panel of invited external and internal jurors. This year, the competition will ask students to focus their creative imagination on 'the urban experience' through a site-specific challenge, to be revealed at the launch on January 21.

Too many people believe that if you just open a Twitter account or run a UGC contest you are all set with customers, only to get burned in the space down the road. Social media is powerful when based on a solid foundation for engagement and a strategy that looks for long-term engagement vs quick hits. In this talk learn why integrating social media within the organization and engaging directly with customers and employees is the way to drive meaningful success, and what the tools can and cannot do for your company. DESCRIPTION:AFTER THE COLLAPSE: Technology, Open and the Future of Government What do Facebook, 911 and NASA all have in common? They all offer us a window into how our industrial era government may be redesigned for the digital age. Whether a interested designer, a disruptive programmer, a restless public servant or a curious citizen David will push your thinking on what the future has in store for the one institution we all rely on: Government. ABOUT THE SPEAKER David Eaves A public policy entrepreneur, open government activist and collaboration expert, David advises the Mayor of Vancouver on open government, works with two spin-offs of the Harvard Negotiation Project and is a fellow of the Centre for the Study of Democracy at Queen's University. DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT One of the main complaints that user experience practitioners have with agile development is the feeling that there is no big picture to work towards. This causes problems with prioritization, over or under designing, and wasted work. A solution to this problem is having a Sprint Zero before coding starts. In Sprint Zero the team defines product vision, sets overall goals and roughly plans out future sprints. The existence of a Sprint Zero is a strong predictor of success and satisfaction on an agile project. This talk outlines what does and does not get done in Sprint Zero in order to have a successful launch of the development stage of your project. SPEAKER BIO Lynn Miller is the leader of the User Experience team at Autodesk Canada where she oversees a group of Interaction and Graphic Designers who create innovative interfaces for complex 3D graphics applications. A UX practitioner for over 18 years, she is responsible for founding the team and bringing User Centered Design into the company. She has been a strong proponent of Agile development since being introduced to it in 2002 and has been successful at modifying interaction design to work seamlessly with it.

DESCRIPTION:Every year there are families faced with what might be the most trying moments of their lives - dealing with a family member's battle against terminal illness. The burden of the emotional, physical and financial pain leave them with little energy to cherish the precious last moments they have with their ill family member. The Heart House Hospice is a volunteer driven organisation which reaches out to these families in their time of greatest need. They serve as the pillars to lighten the load put on the families, they become friends to those that are lonely and most importantly, become companions that guide, enriching and adding poignancy to each last moment they have left. This year we want to raise money to directly reach out to these families and give them food and gifts to be able to enjoy what might be the last holiday season they share together. Join us at Marben to aid us in our goal of raising $20,000 for families in need. The event is brought to you by the team behind #GenYTO and promises to be great start to the holiday season with great music and great prizes. What may just be another night out for you can help to create one of the most memorable holiday seasons of someone's life. It?s a simple concept: a grassroots effort to make sure startup folks get in touch and stay in touch. All it took was for Raymond Luk of Flow Ventures (a moving force behind Montreal Startup Drinks) to recruit Toronto all-round-instigator David Crow who was on board immediately. Now, with Bryan Watson of the National Angel Capital Organization and CEO Fusion stepping up to help out, we are looking forward to an even better Startup Drinks Toronto 5!

DESCRIPTION:Working in a knowledge intensive and networked economy, amidst a rapidly changing economic conditions and worker demographics, demands new approaches to leadership, management, and strategic thinking. Agility and resilience during times of accelerated change are critical to sustaining organizational effectiveness. Recognizing that our organizations are much more than aggregates of individuals boxed in org charts has resulted in an acknowledgement of the necessary role of informal communities and networks in parallel to formal structures. The challenge is how to effectively lead and manage both the informal and formal communities given the added complexity of the accelerated pace of change. Sense-making, the human side of knowledge management, is the process of making sense of the world so we know how to act in it. Through sense-making we reveal how things are, how we perceive things, and how we know things, which collectively provide new insights for managing complexity. Drawing on both theoretical work and practice in the application of methods derived from cognitive science, complex adaptive systems, and aspects of anthropology, this presentation will introduce the Cynefin framework http://harvardbusines... and its implications to knowledge management and leading organizations in rapidly changing times. DESCRIPTION:Lynette Latinsky, "Can Lunch Be On Me Today?" Building a business means networking and schmoozing, but without proper strategies it is not always financially viable. It is important to work out what you are spending your money on. At the end of the month, do you know where your money went? As well, it is just as important to understand where your money is going and how to make it work for you in the most logical and effective way, so that you spend ?smart ? not more?. When this is added to the mix, people become more successful and less stressed, and can build their careers properly. I will present some strategies that work, and get you on the path to create your plan.

Answer: Watching two people do that -- double your pleasure, double your fun! Yes friends, the time has come for Shannon and Will's joint birthday celebration -- otherwise known as the "Shannon Will Party And So Will Will" Party. Confused? Not as confused as you're going to be by the end of the night. Thanks to some of the best booze money can buy, you'll likely have no idea what's going on by midnight, prompting you to ask yourself questions like "Who's hand is that on my ass and why do I like it so much?", "Why isn't this handstand the best idea ever right now?", and the timeless classic, "Where are my pants?" The fun gets going at 8:00 pm this Saturday, November 7th at Pravda Vodka Bar at 36 Wellington East (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/pravda-vodka-bar-toronto). We'll try to get a reservation going under our names later this week and depending on the count, bottle service may be in order, so please, if you plan on coming RSVP on the Facebook Event page so we know how many smiling faces are showing up (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=166924198534). From this context the presentation will propose considerations of whether Knowledge Management can evolve from commonly used status-reporting (presenting "Dashboards") to a paradigm of proposing actions ("Actionboards"). The discussion will outline specific techniques to enhance "soft" decisions involving various qualitative and quantitative data. Our speaker: Ray Gilbert, MBA, P. Eng, MASc Ray is President of ICTkeynote Inc, a consultancy that creates educational keynotes and workshops to enhance collaboration between CIO-IT leaders and their technology partners. Through ICTkeynote, Ray provides engagement advice and leadership to advance client insights and accelerate the adoption of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This role leverages perspectives acquired through 6+ years as a VP in IT for Enterprise Collaboration at Lucent Technologies. In addition to this IT strategy and planning experience Ray has 15+ years in senior operations positions with Nortel and Lucent in Canada and the US.

DESCRIPTION:The pictures of Sean Connery in his ridiculous costume from Zardoz can only mean one thing: it's time for another FailCamp! FailCamp is a celebration of failure. It's about sharing your tales of epic fail and the lessons you learned from them. It's about learning not to view failure as defeat, but as a learning opportunity and stepping stone to success. It's about taking away the fear of failure and learning to take a chance, think big and achieve what you thought you couldn't. We'll start with some stories of historical failure: some you've read in the history books, and some culled from our own personal histories -- the wisdom of fail through the ages. Then we'll turn the microphone on you, inviting you to share your greatest stories of failure, challenging you to entertain the audience and even win prizes if our "Panel of Fail" deems your failure or the lessons derived from it to be the best of the bunch. The more embarassing, hilarious and educational your story, the better! Where else can you win big by losing big? Joey deVilla (Microsoft, DemoCamp, accordion trouble-making) and John Bristowe (Microsoft) will host the event, encouraging you to confess your failures while sharing their own. FailCamp alumni Meghann Millard (Unspace, RubyFringe, FutureRuby) and Justin Kozuch (Refresh Events) and others will be the Panel of Fail whom you must impress in order to win prizes. FailCamp takes place on Tuesday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m. at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (255 Front Street West, between John and Simcoe Streets). Admission is free -- all you have to do is register to attend, and make sure you bring your best story of fail! It'll be full of win!

This Toolkit will be presented at and endorsed by a special meeting of the Conference Board of Canada in front of Dr. Margaret Chan, head of the World Health Organization, on 25 September. Graham Westwood is the president and founder of ProCarta Inc., a software and consulting firm. Working with many governments and industries across the world, ProCarta helps organizations deploy the right knowledge to the right people at the right time. Graham holds a B.Sc from the University of Guelph and is an active marathon runner and coach.

DESCRIPTION:We're moving from an industrial to a knowledge economy, where creativity and innovation will be the keys to value. New rules apply. Yet two hundred years of industrial habits are embedded in our workplaces, our schools and our systems of government. How must we change our work practices to thrive in the 21st Century? For the first time, Dave Gray will share insights from his upcoming book on the work of creativity and innovation, due to be published in the first quarter of 2010.

Interested? Please read the rules of Ignite. Once you?ve read up on the process, apply to speak. Colin Bowern "The Not-So-Scary Side of ASP.NET - Model View Controller in the Real World" With MVC stretching far back in the programming history books to languages like Smalltalk in recent years we have been seeing a resurgence in the popularity of this approach. With a recognition of the growing popularity of both the MVC pattern and the benefits of scaffolding in quickly developing and deploying professional applications Microsoft introduced the ASP.NET MVC web framework. It delivers choice and control to ASP.NET developers beyond the already diverse field of languages they could use (you know someone out there is getting a kick out of writing Web apps in COBOL). In this session we will do a fly over of the ASP.NET MVC web framework to give you an introduction into its riches, tell you how you can get yours hands out it without spending a dime and open up the conversation to see how it stacks up against other options on the market. Our goal is to get you familiar with choices available to you to broaden your skills in delivering professional web applications quickly into all types of environments.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at CSI on Thursday September 10, from 12 to 7 pm, for the live webcast of TEDxTO. We'll have a live webcast of the TEDxTO event, refreshments, and speakers. Drop in for as long as you want, leave when you've had enough, or stay for the whole day! What is TED? TED is an annual event where some of the world's leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. "TED" stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design - three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. Past speakers include Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono. What is TEDx? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx - local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. What is TEDxTO? TEDxToronto (TEDxTO) was established by an enthusiastic group of volunteers based in Toronto who are passionate about TED and generating "Ideas Worth Spreading". The theme of TEDxTO is "What's Next?" We see it as a challenge: what are the new and as-of-yet undiscovered ideas, projects, and people that will shape the future of our city, and ultimately the world? It's also a challenge to our speakers. No matter who steps on the stage, you won't hear their standard pitch or riff on their well-known achievements - at TEDxTO it's new ideas only. 13 speakers (See speaker bios on TEDxTO.com for full information) 3 TED Videos 2 networking breaks Toronto's 1st TEDxTO After-Party 130+ live attendees with a webcast of approx. 3500 connections. Visit TEDxTO.COM for more information. The main event will be held at the Theatre Passe-Muraille. Because space and tickets are limited, we are hosting a live webcast of the event at CSI. Date: Thursday, Sep. 10, 2009 Time: 1pm to 7pm (stay as long or as short as you want. DESCRIPTION:Wax Mannequin ?SAXON? CD Release w. special guests Parlovr & Sister Thursday September 3rd The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern 9pm * 8$ WAX MANNEQUIN (Hamilton, ON) Part wandering minstrel, part rock animal, Wax Mannequin combines a fine sense of prog-rock parody with intense sincerity and lyrical smarts. He will indoctrinate you with chilling harmonies, absurd lyrics and the almighty power of the guitar. Wax's impending release 'Saxon' marks a gritty return to the psych-folk roots of this rambling iconoclast. Sounds Like: maleness, manliness and masculinity - idiosyncratic classic rock for today. For Fans Of: www.myspace.com/waxmannequin PARLOVR (Montreal, QC) A cheap Kmart guitar with its guts ripped out, a two-piece drum kit and a keyboard with a mind of its own would all be alone if they weren't all thrown in the mess that PARLOVR got them in when they stumbled together in the wintry months of 2006. Reacting against the multi-instrumental, many-membered orchestral bands that crowded the local Montreal scene at the time, PARLOVR was started with the intention of blowing amps and streamlining pop melodies, bringing back the power-trio of the 90s with an off-the-wall twist. Sounds Like: montreal pop art brut, sloppy and thrilling, feral and fun. For Fans Of: Nirvana, Sloan, Wolf Parade www.myspace.com/parlourmontreal SISTER (Toronto, ON) SISTER plays tender, heavy folk-metal steeped in vocal harmonies. Sometimes they're Heart, and sometimes Neil Young, depending on the club's sound system that night. It's the new band by Carla and Lynette Gillis, whose love of heavy metal has kept them busy since their pre-teens. The Gillis sisters performed in the 90s Halifax indie band Plumtree, as well as in the punk trio Absolutely Nothing, the dark pop band Bontempi and the Vancouver-Toronto long-distance experiment Bells Clanging. Sounds Like: epic-ness and heavy lady harmonies For Fans Of: Heart, Eric?s Trip, Guns N? Roses www.myspace.com/sisterband
