Task Ave has landed.

Today is the day I’ll no longer be able to make excuses for forgetting to pick things up at the store. Yes, Task Avenue is live & available in the iTunes app store.

After a whirlwind weekend at Startup Weekend Toronto we were lucky enough to be invited to present at DemoCamp. As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve had several wonderful articles written about us including articles in BlogTO and the Toronto Star. Much love to Erin Bury for her endless support and kind words.

When the dust of the world-wide media tour (cough) settled, the team sat down and realized that we had some real work to do.

Countless Skype conferences, beer fuelled meetings, sleepless nights and 1457 emails (so far) later, Task Ave is finally here.

Stealing time.

Mike Monteiro’s full of gems this week. Yesterday he offered Gap a logo that could fully resuscitate their credibility following this week’s Gap logo catastrophe, but earlier this week he focused on something dear to us, time.

The Chokehold of Calendars discusses the concept of a goal oriented calendar, rather than using a calendar to reference interruptions of your working time.

In Mike’s words:

In my experience, most people don’t schedule their work. They schedule the interruptions that prevent their work from happening.

Startup Weekend Toronto.

This weekend plays host to Startup Weekend Toronto, an event that pits the smart entrepreneurial minds of Toronto against each other in a winner take all battle for prizes and glory. I can’t wait.

The event kicks off Friday with a keynote talk by Freshbook’s own Mike McDerment and an panel moderated by Dan Martell featuring April Dunford, Sarah Prevette & Leila Boujnane. All the speakers are superstars of the Toronto startup community that shouldn’t be missed!

Following the kick off talks, the challenge will begin. Participants will pitch ideas for the weekend’s 30-hour building session. Once you find an idea you like, teams will form, and the building will begin.

The importance of infrastructure: Haiti and beyond.

In the wake of the earthquake and ongoing disaster relief in Haiti there has been a lot of discussion around the political state of Haiti. Setting these political issues aside, let’s look at the disaster itself and, more specifically, how Haiti’s infrastructure has played a roll in multiplying the level of destruction and, as a result, greatly increased the requirement for aid and subsequent rebuilding efforts.

Thoughts on Community

Back in June, on a sunny Patio Friday afternoon, we landed at the Adelaide St Pub rooftop patio. As the conversation ebbed and flowed with the arrival and departure of various new and familiar faces throughout the afternoon it became more evident to me that the Toronto Twitter community is strong and bright. We have, as a group, leveraged the online communication utility for many great things, not the least of which is simply to form new and formidable relationships with people we wouldn’t meet otherwise. This, naturally, also leads to learning things and finding opportunities we wouldn’t otherwise.

What do all great customers have in common?

A great customer is gold. You enjoying working with them. They enjoy working with you. Man, could you ask for anything more? We’re so thankful for our great clients. And I wonder, what’s in their DNA that makes them so magical?

Patio Friday June 19, 2009

Last week’s Patio Friday was another fantastic day. With the imminent threat of rain in the forecast, our good friend Karin suggested the covered rooftop patio of The Pilot in Yorkville. To our oh-so-pleasant surprise the sun shone brightly over our afternoon and we lingered from noon or so until after six o’clock with some new and familiar faces.

I’ve always known that Toronto is a hotbed of business, technology and artistic talent and have had that insight tuned sharply over the past few weeks as Patio Friday has seen a steady rotation of engaging and bright people join us at the table for good food, beverages and lively conversations on life, love, and the world-at-large.
